Four Types Of Wheelchair Cushions

Wheelchairs are such valuable pieces of equipment for those with mobility problems or disabilities. Picking out the right wheelchair isn't exactly easy since there are so many considerations such as terrain, body weight and specific needs of the one using the chair. That is one reason customized wheel chairs are so popular today.

Once you have chosen the best wheelchair for your needs, then you can choose accessories like the cushion. Actually, choosing the right wheelchair cushion takes some careful thought too. The cushion must not be chosen for comfort lone but also for medical benefits. A cushion must properly support the spine so the rule of thumb is to select one that is no more than 3 fingers thick. When it comes to wheelchair cushions, there are four main types you can choose from: air flotation, foam, urethane honeycomb and gel.

Foam Wheelchair Cushions

Foam is fairly popular because it is very comfortable and has been around for a long time and proven to be both comfortable and offer support where needed. The best foam cushion will provide adequate support and also shape to fit the user. The downside to foam wheelchair cushions is that they lose their shape over time and tend to wear out fairly quickly. For that reason a foam cushion is not well suited for heavy long term use.

Gel Wheelchair Cushions

Gel cushions are made by adding gel pouches atop of a foam base. This makes the cushion fairly heavy and can add to the weight of a wheelchair. There is also the possibility that a gel cushion can spring a leak. Their main function is to provide support to atrophied muscles.

Air Flotation Wheelchair Cushions

These wheelchair cushions provide support by air alone. They aren't recommended for users who move around a lot in their wheelchairs because they don't provide as much stability as other types of cushions. Leaking is also a hazard with the air cushions.

Urethane Honeycomb Wheelchair Cushions

This comfortable cushion distributes body weight well. It has a distinctive beehive pattern which allows for increased airflow. It is also very lightweight and can absorb shocks. For these reasons this wheelchair cushion is probably the most popular choice today.

Ultimately, the type of wheelchair cushion you choose will depend upon your individual needs. Of course you will want to go for what is comfortable but you also need the cushion that is best suited for your medical condition. If you are not sure what to choose you can ask your doctor or nurse for a recommendation. Since you will probably purchase your wheelchair cushion at a medical supply store, you can also discuss your needs with the medical professionals who work their since they are very knowledgeable about medical equipment.
